Shaping the National Design Collection, before the museum closes to the public at 6 p.m. Zuzek was a staff designer for Key West Hand Print Fabrics, where Lilly Pulitzer sourced most of her fabrics between 1962 and 1985. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Althea McNish (British, 1924–2020) moved to London and studied textile design at the Royal College of Arts. Known for her unprecedented combinations of patterns and colors, McNish helped introduce the Caribbean aesthetic to an international audience.

Equal access to art and design education was a cause championed by Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt, who established the museum of decorative arts that became the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Carrying on that legacy, this Design Topic features a selection of remarkable women in design from the museum’s collection. The Collection Browser is available on seven tables installed throughout all floors of the museum, giving you access to thousands of objects in the museum’s collection, including those currently on view in the galleries. You can also draw a shape that will bring up a related collection object, or try their hand at drawing simple three-dimensional forms. When an image is selected, the table works as a virtual gallery wall, displaying catalog information and historical data, with the added digital benefit of category and color tags.

You can also take a regularly scheduled tour of the Schindler-designed Mackey Apartments which are nearby. This house is in an area of the Silver Lake neighborhood called The Colony, where you'll find a number of Neutra designs on and around Neutra Place. You can see them from the outside by touring off Earl Street between Silver Lake Boulevard and Glendale Boulevard. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House.

The trustees assigned the fourth floor of the Cooper Union's Foundation Building to the sisters, and the museum was opened to the public in 1897. The museum was formally transferred to the Smithsonian on July 1, 1968. The museum was renamed the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design at the time of the transfer, and became the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in 1969. The Cooper-Hewitt was the first Smithsonian museum to be located outside of Washington, DC. In 1970, the museum moved into its present home, the Carnegie Mansion, which was renovated and reopened to the public in 1976. The museum was renamed the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 1994.
The museum changed its name to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2014. An Atlas of Es Devlin is the first monographic museum exhibition dedicated to British artist and stage designer Es Devlin (born 1971), who is renowned for work that transforms audiences. “Play designer” on 4K resolution touchscreen tables, developed by Ideum, that feature specialized interactive software designed by Local Projects. The 84-, 55-, and 32-inch tables use projected capacitive touch technology – the same technology found in popular tablets and smart phones. The ultra-high-definition resolution allows you to zoom in on objects to see minute details like never before.
Active primarily in Paris, France, Sonia Delaunay (Ukrainian, 1885–1979) was a modern artist and designer who merged art and everyday life. Along with her husband Robert Delaunay, she developed a theory for the vibration of contrasting colors when they are placed side by side.
